South Africa’s base oils imports rebounded in October to the highest in more than nine years as a resumption of flows from the Netherlands coincided with the arrival of a large shipment from Saudi Arabia.Total imports of 47,500 kilolitres (42,000t) in October rose from less than 20,000kl the previous month, government data showed.The rise in shipments lifted South Africa’s total base oils imports to 319,000kl in the first ten months of the year. The volume was up 12pc from 285,000kl during the same period last year.Base oils imports rose even as South Africa’s economy shrank in the third quarter of the year. The country’s automobile sales extended their decline in November for a fourth month.The disconnect instead reflected South Africa’s total reliance on base oils imports this year to cover its requirements.Imports rose in October following a resumption of normal flows from the Netherlands.
